Book Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo advanced reading copy was provided courtesy of Simon & Schuster Canada. I started reading yesterday and found that I couldn't put the book down because I was so engrossed in Evelyn's narrative, how and why she ended up with seven marriages, and how she got to be the powerful sex icon she was in those glitzy Hollywood days. I finished most of this in a single day!

Hollywood cinema legend Evelyn Hugo, who is aging and reclusive, is now prepared to open up about her dazzling and scandalous life.

I was aware that this was also available as an audiobook, and it did feature a stellar cast of narrators, including Robin Miles and Julia Whelan, but after reading, I believe I preferred the written word. A better sense of being in that era and in that environment was created by being able to view and read the sections written up as though they were in the tabloid pages, the gossip rag news, and the letters. I absolutely enjoyed the way Evelyn would relate her side of the tale and the way that specific incident was later covered in the gossip columns. Additionally, it seemed to be simpler or better to anticipate where the narrative would diverge from Evelyn's perspective and transfer to Monique's.

When "the" Evelyn Hugo contacts Vivant magazine, specifically Monique, for an exclusive interview with the elderly cinema icon, Monique receives the assignment of a lifetime. She is rumored to be giving an interview about auctioning off some of her most well-known gowns, according to Vivant and Monique. Instead, Evelyn tells Monique that she wants to be honest with her and disclose the whole truth, and that she will then sell this biography to the highest bidder. Why, then, Monique?

Evelyn Hugo is undoubtedly a study in contrasts. When Monique sits down to record Evelyn's memoirs, she discovers that Evelyn is the type of person you despise yet still find yourself admiring. There is no denying Evelyn's strength, but is she also brutally conceited and selfish? No matter how many times or how many people she wrongs along the way, everything she does is done to ensure that her star will soar. Her way or the highway. Evelyn believes that she simply takes these things to ensure her life and the safety of her one true and great love, but you sometimes start to wonder about her since she only considers what she wants and ignores how her actions may negatively impact or harm other people. She also performs admirably.

As Evelyn draws to a close, she surprises Monique with a significant revelation that directly impacts her, forcing her to make difficult choices on her own and once more exposing Evelyn's self-centeredness and cunning behavior.

A fantastic companion book, in my opinion, is June by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore. I enjoyed reading June throughout the last summer. Great summer reading is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo! Regarding Evelyn Hugo, Miranda Beverly-Whittemore has this to say:

Big juicy secrets are at the core of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, not just regarding the shocking identity of movie actress Evelyn Hugo's true love, but also regarding the extent to which she has gone in order to shield that enigmatic lover. This riotous book will entice you even as it leaves you wanting more because it is brimming with heartbreak, treachery, and a lifetime of Hollywood gossip. Bittersweet and June by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, a New York Times bestselling author
